How does a newcomer get their photograph in a gallery?

I am an amateur photographer for years and I want to start getting serious. I want focus on fine art. For starters, I live in a small suburb of Detroit, MI. and we have a local art gallery that invites new artists to expose. It's great and I am trying to work together now. My question is, how people do their work in galleries larger or more prestigious in big cities like Los Angeles or New York? How can we go from unknown to be known? Thank you for your help.

It's like learning to walk. You must first crawl. You make the perfect first step by posting in your local gallery. It is actually quite easy to submit to galleries around the world. Google "call for nominations" and you can start to get into the clique. It's really like anything else, the more you get into it, the result will be for you. I submitted to galleries in many, many places. This will take you into a loop that will lead to contacts with other galleries, and so on. Getting your work selected to be in a gallery is an entirely different matter. When you begin to submit galleries, you will soon see the types of photos that are selected. Even in your local gallery, attention and learning from others. This does not to copy another work, always make your own and follow your own inspiration, but looking at their work always gives me new energy and ideas. My goal is to also obtain work in a gallery in New York. I have eight photos submitted to a future show in SoHo gallery here, I hope this time will be good and I'll be selected. But otherwise I'll just keep trying. It's really all you can do. Continue to improve your art and keep submitting to call for application. I have at least 2 emails in my inbox every day wanting galleries bids. Just start slowly and it will build for you. There are also reviews of portfolios in Houston and Seattle, but they require serious work portfolio of your hand, something you'll probably need some years to create. There are representatives from galleries across the country during these examinations. They are usually held once every two years. Email me if you want more info I'll have to look at the details for you. Steve
