Can anyone explain the filters of the camera lens?

I am new to photography and I am curious to know about filters lens as they did not learn about this in class (I take a photography class at a local college). Can anyone explain the use various filters and what they are used and where they should be used.

In digital there are a few main types, you will find use. Polarizer lets in light at an angle, which has like 15 effects that I'm too lazy to type. A ND filter darkens everything, there are many uses. An ND Grad, the sky darkens for sunsets or hills, where the sun is super bright and the hills were black as ink, do not figure. A UV is for both the physical protection against scratches and UV plastics. It has limited effects on the image. And that does not sub-categorize it from there. Change filters in general the light before they leave the plane. If a shadow or simply change the light rays as a polarizing effect.
