Studio Photographer's Lighting

R. Dodge Woodson

The lighting system combined with the right camera that offers a fast shutter speed can literally stop a bullet in the air. Well, it seems to stop when you see the image. No, I do not suggest that you pull the lights and watch them explode on impact. I am referring to catching the ball rotating as an image. Studio strobes can be extremely powerful and can stop all kinds of movement without risk of blurred images.

If you plan to convert a spare bedroom, basement, attic or in a studio, you should seriously consider buying studio flash. This type of lighting is not cheap, but you can get the name brand that lights do a wonderful job for reasonable prices.

My studio lights are made by Novatron ®, I am very happy with them. This company is known for its excellence in the lighting equipment for both amateurs and professionals. It is common to find kits available from Novatron and other quality manufacturers giving you all the basics of proper studio lighting. For less than $ 600 you can often find kits that include at least two flash heads, sometimes three, is light, umbrellas, carrying case and other accessories. Anyone with an interest in photography studio can benefit from these lighting kits semi-pro. If you decide to use such lighting, invest in a good meter that takes light readings of flash. Otherwise, you will suffer trials and Reviews exposure error, which is very frustrating. Another option is to use the automatic mode on your camera and depend on camera's metering system.

Quartz

Quartz-halogen lamps are an alternative to head-flash photography studio. Problems occur with photography flash. One of the most common is to discover after you look at pictures taken as the flash units created unwanted shadows. This does not occur with quartz-halogen lamps. These lights are on while you compose an image, so you see the exact effect of lighting on your subject. This is a great advantage for many photographers. An added bonus for this type of lighting is that it is less expensive than flash units. A good quartz-halogen Starter will cost you about $ 250. It will include lights, cutting stream (which will allow the angle of light), light stands, and a carrying case.

(WARNING) Quartz halogen lamps Photo others become extremely hot during use. They can easily cause severe burns and are able to fire if they come into contact with flammable materials.

I started my lighting Studio quartz-halogen lamps and continue to use the same light today. My flash heads see much use, but do my lights steady. Both types of lighting have their advantages and disadvantages. A disadvantage of quartz lamps is that they become very hot. This can be a model makeup running, presenting a fire hazard if flammable materials come in contract with them, and there is a risk of burns serious if someone touches the lights.

Another problem with the lighting quartz is that it can not stop the movement, as a flash can. Since quartz lighting product tungsten lighting, you should put a correction filter on your lens to maintain accurate color color photograph. But this is no big deal. Of course, you can correct lighting in your photo editing program on your computer.

Quartz lamps allow you to take readings of natural light. This can be done with a measuring device independent light or one that is in your device photo. A flash meter is not necessary. Since quartz lamps are lit at any time, you can see the shadows and lighting effects before you fire shutter. This is a great help. If you want big-time lighting on a limited budget, quartz-halogen lamps are the way to go.

Ring Lights

Ring lights are flashed specialty. They are used with macro lenses when taking pictures together. These units often consist of a sensor that attaches to the shoe of a camera, a battery and flash attachment. The flash is mounted on a ring objective in a manner similar to a filter. As the Flash elements surrounding the lens, it works well, the lighting, your subject. Some models, like the one I have, you can disable half of the ring for creative photography. Other fire models at once. For documentary photography closeups, ring lights can not be beaten.

A ring of light would normally not used for anything other than the documentary work. Take a photo of a model of man with a ring of light used for flash would result in a bright and well lit photograph that might be boring. Ring lights provide extensive detail in the subjects. This is generally not advisable when photographing people or animals. If you do not run after grasshoppers, fungi and wildflowers, you should not need a light ring. But, If you like to understand the nature of your memory card with you in a film canister, a ring of light may be right for you.

Flash In A Box

Some photographers love to take their shows on the flash drive. If you're one of those road warriors, watching the flashes of portable studio that can Traveling with you. All studio lighting can be used where electricity is available, but if you take pictures outside beaten track, you may want to go flashing battery with you. There are two ways to do so. One is much more expensive than the other.

If you want to take studio full power flashes in a field to photograph a model, be prepared to spend between $ 1,000 and $ 1,500 for the privilege. You might find a portable, battery-powered web site for less than $ 1,000, but they are not numerous. It might be cheaper to take your ordinary studio lamps and rent a small electric generator to your meeting location. Besides, it might even be cheaper to buy a small generator to run your AC lights. It is very difficult to justify or afford flash location. But do not be discouraged, I'll show you how beat the system.

Most photography does not require flash super-powerful studio. If you want to make models on site and get great photos, you can done with inexpensive, portable, battery flashes. I speak the same electronic flash that you could normally get on your camera. These flashes once put together cords or timing or slaves and the light make a good substitute for expensive kit location. You can still use umbrellas and maps reflection, and you will save a huge amount of money. Granted, you will not have any power and control as you would with a set location, but you probably will not need.

To give you an idea of results you can receive with inexpensive equipment flash Pocket size, let me share a story from my past with you. When I started to do photography marriage, I could not afford the best equipment, but I need my work to look good. My second assignment was a wedding party difficult.

I should have to light a large ballroom with electronic flash to meet my client. That would have been a right time for a clean series of flashes, but I did not. To compensate for my problem, I took several small flashes, some inflatable umbrellas, and a little light at reception. My assistant and I fire position before the arrival of guests crowded. Each electronic flash was equipped with a peanut slave. When I turned on my powerful flash bracket mounted on the camera, all the slaves could play the other flashes. This simple, inexpensive set up allowed me to cover the full light of a great hall and the crowd with minimal cost.

I've never owned a pre-flashes. During all my years in the field, I always used simple, battery powered flashing with good results. You can spend lots of money on flashy gear Pro if you want, but it is rarely necessary.

Other factors Flash

There are a number of accessories available for photographers who use this material flash. Whether you use a flash pocket $ 60 or schema Pro $ 1000, you can always improve your flash photography with accessories. Buying things is half of what makes photography so much fun! The accessories are not required equipment, but many of them can enhance your photographs and produce beautiful effects. You'll need a camera with either a shoe or PC sync port connection.

Many photographers advance to a point where they want remote and / or the multi-flash. If you reach this level, you should probably use a sync cord for your flash distance. Slave devices can be used to trigger multiple flashes. There is a common problem with sync cords. They do not always keep good connections with the case of the device.

You can reduce failures flash using a sync key, a small device that resizes the joints, to keep your connections tight. This is a very inexpensive accessory that must be kept in your bag or jacket at all times when doing photography flash.

Slaves come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Peanut slaves are inexpensive and work well in most conditions. This type of slave that I use and I recommend them highly. Most devices are made slaves as a claw. Those who are not can be coupled with a remote flash with a sync cable. The cord runs only from the slave flash, not your housing a remote device. Once you reach the point of doing creative things with artificial lighting, you need more flash devices and shooting distance.

Studio flashes usually have good quality slaves built into them. When you pull a fire, they all go off. Before investing All studio flash, make sure they have adjustable power settings and built-in slaves. When this happens, you simply connect a light to your camera body with a sync cord, which is also known as a PC cord.

Filters

Filters are available for most cameras and lights flashing. Use filters with your lighting can produce some remarkable results. Even hot pocket cheap are often sold with an assortment of color filters. Some models use gel-type filters and other filters use plastic. It is a good idea to ensure that all lighting units accept you buy filters for future interest in special effects.

Snoots

Barndoors Snoots and sound like things you find on the farm, but they are accessories for the lighting of the photograph. All light studio of renowned accept these types of accessories.

Barndoors are composed of two or four metal legs that allow you to illuminate the angle creatively. Snoots are used to concentrate a beam of light. They are often used to highlight the hair of a model. There many other types of add-ons available for studio lighting, so make sure the products you intend to accept.

Umbrellas

Most people saw umbrellas used in Flash photography sessions. They are used to bounce light attractively smooth, without shade. Most photographers use umbrellas, umbrellas, but produce more money rebound. You should experiment with both types when you are the ease with which one to use on various missions. As good as umbrellas are, can be overwhelming sometimes, and they do not have much mobility. There is a solution to this dilemma.

Umbrellas bags are the answer to increased mobility and better results when using small flash units. These small blow-up umbrellas are just a few inches in diameter, but they produce great results. They attach to an electronic flash with rubber bands. Your flash fires in bright surface of the device and is reflected by the inner surface white or silver. You get bounced lighting from a small, portable, affordable package. I've used for modeling photo shoots and weddings with beautiful results. This is an accessory flash any serious photographer should own.

Reflector Cards

Reflector cards are often used in photography. They are implemented with natural light and flash photography. A map of reflector may be a small hand-held, or it can be a great unit which is supported by a support. The painted walls and ceilings of buildings to act as a large reflector cards for photographers bounce flash. Flash or by bouncing the natural light with mirror card, you receive a lighting which is not hard and unpleasant.

Lightweight blankets survival times to pocket size and proportions are often money on one side. These inexpensive items make great reflectors.

Meters

Exposure meters are critical to good photography. Most modern cameras have some type of high-meter, but these meters can be fooled under certain conditions. Use of multiple flash units is one of those conditions. If you are going to do much flash photography with any type of flash but a dedicated automatic, camera flash, invest in a decent flash meter. You save time, frustration and wasted film many times. A lot of counters that double flash counters reflection, so that you are getting the two yards for the price of one. This is the type that I recommend. Flash photography and studio lighting can add a new dimension to your hobby, so give it serious consideration. You should enjoy the journey.
