Use the diffused light – like everyone else said, avoid flash direct that the lighting produced by it is quite harsh. The best type of natural light is an overcast day. You can get artistic blur filters that give your photos a softer, but in my opinion they tend to make the photos look very fake and overdone. Most other magazines are retouched in Photoshop or similar program. Many details in the final image takes place in a computer.
